More Of The Foley Fall Out

October 24, 2006

As the November election quickly approaches, the latest in GOP scandals seems to be taking more twists and turns than one could imagine. In the latest piece concerning Foley, he has come out as a victim of childhood rape. While one certainly most feel for the ex-congressman, its important not to forget the political climate concerning the case itself. After all, it was this case that has led to the fall of the GOPs support base. Oddly enough it was able shadow the other big scandal that received barely a weeks work of attention. That being of coarse George Tenant’s warning that something was going to go down of September 11th and the Bush administration decided not to act. In fact it was an oddly calm environment in Washington considering how serious the head of the CIA believed the attacks were going to be on 9/11. Well, that day we saw four plane getting hijacked and two major buildings go down at an alarming rate. One would have thought that the Bush administration’s lack of action would have been grounds for the call of impeachment after the Bob Woodward book was released. But, the Foley case  took center stage.

It was just a few weeks ago when mark Foley was painted as a predator, child molester, sexual deviant and man with no moral fabric what so ever. So leave it to the GOP spin machine to clear his image in a way that has turned the torches and pitch forks from a disgraced Foley to a 72 year old priest who has stated that the only physical contact between him and a young Mark was a moment of bonding. The statement seems to be buried in the press a fact that comes as little surprise. But even this maneuver has done little to help the GOP in the polls. In fact, the Republican’s are still very much separated over how to handle the case. Below is a link to Foley’s revelation that he was molested.

In a broadcast on Friday the 20th of October, WFLA/NBC Florida, reported that the situation in Baghdad has spiraled into a civil war with Iraqi Citizens and US troops caught in the middle. You can view the link below.  So while the Republicans and Democrats argue about what is the best way to fight this war, the Vietnam like quagmire that was once Iraq has spun completely out of control. But the question that must be asked is, is this a surprise? The warning signs were certainly there. One needs to look through the archives of the Village Voice to find the article, “We Will Win The War But, Can We Win The Peace?”  Scott Ritter also warned about the lies leading up to the war along with the outcome of an invasion.  Of coarse the warnings were brushed aside as “leftist propaganda,” and to this day you still have George W Bush’s 34% support base that still try to make the point that the those of us on the left created the situation in the Middle east. That some how the fact that ego and the hunger for an economic upper hand in that part of the world lead us into the war had nothing to do with the current situation.

If there is any upside to this mess, it is that the Nov. 7th elections are right around the corner which gives us the chance to rid ourselves of this rotten lot.

Until next time.
